Clinical Trial Network

Objective

The European Society of Anaesthesiology Clinical Trial Network provides an infrastructure for Institutions, clinicians and scientists allowing to work collaboratively across international borders to improve the care of patients in the field of Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care, Peri-Operative Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Pain Medicine. International networks all over the world have demonstrated the advantages of collaboration to address and answer clinically relevant research questions. Long-term collaborative relationships within research, education and clinical practice require dedicated resources and infrastructure enabling access to the entire clinical community. The aim of the ESA Clinical Trial Network (CTN) is to build such a collaborative network.

Studies

In view of these facts, the ESA, as a society with more than 6200 members working in 97 countries, decided in 2010 to establish the ESA CTN, to facilitate, integrate and support clinical anaesthesiology research on an international level. Already in 2011 the first observational clinical trials could be performed with by ESA CTN and more than 500 centres contributed to the great success of EUSOS study and PERISCOPE study. The following year, ESA CTN selected the first paediatric multicentric audit of clinical anaesthetic practice organised in Europe, named APRICOT: more than 250 centres participated and the goal of recruiting over 24,000 children was reached. Currently, EPiMAP Obstetrics, PROBESE, MET-REPAIR and COMMAS are actively recruiting centres.
