Job Description

Professional Anaesthetist who supervises the mentorship programme of the ESA. Mentorship Leader work in close relationship with the ESA Research Committee and the Research Department Staff. Training: Mentorship Leader reviews Guidance & training material for Mentor-Mentees.

The Mentorship Programme Leader keeps records of mentor programme progress and reports this progress to the Research Committee.

Job Duties

One of the key duties for Mentorship Leader is identifying individuals who would make good mentors. Coordinators interview mentor candidates to find those who possess traits such as knowledge of an organization and the ability to instruct others. They then pair each mentor with a mentee and provide mentors with guidance to teach mentees.

Moreover, monitoring and evaluation of the program forms the main task of the program coordinator. The Mentorship Leader usually monitors these relationships through verbal communications, such as face-to-face or phone conversations. Indirect communication may include reviewing progress reports written by mentors.

Mentorship Leader also evaluate each mentor/mentee pair to determine if any changes must be made, such as reassigning the mentor or mentee. 

Ad-hoc member of ESA RC

As for all Committee Position at the ESA, this job is voluntary, there is no salary. Mentorship Leader will only attend meetings of the Research Committee to Report on Mentorship Programme Progress. He/she will not be involved in the Grant Review nor in the other Research Committee Activities.


The Mentorship Leader will meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a physician, and preferably a qualified anaesthesiologist 
  • Expertise in Training/education
  • Must have been an ESA active member for at least one year 
  • Experience in a local or national Mentorship Programme is a plus 
  • Experience with Online module is a plus 
  • Fluency in English

Term of office

The tenure is for three years, renewable twice for one year (maximum of 5 years). 


Travel expenses to attend meetings (usually held twice a year) are provided according to standard ESA reimbursement policy.
