ESA Guideline on reduction of post-operative delirium

The purpose of the ESA Guideline on post-operative delirium is to provide a practical, clinical overview of the current knowledge and practice advice on the prevention, detection and treatment of postoperative delirium. A systematic assessment of the current quality of evidence will provide the basis for algorithm-based recommendations. These recommendations are meant to enable anaesthesiologists, throughout Europe and beyond, to integrate the best existing knowledge into their daily patients’ care.

The guideline will focus on the early postoperative period of patients undergoing surgery, regardless of age, surgical and clinical setting. However specific areas will be highlighted. In particular, attention will be drawn to elderly patients, who are at major risk for postoperative delirium. The guideline will not focus on patients requiring intensive care for more than 24 hours or those patients for whom ICU-treatment of more than 24 hours is likely or expected as these areas are the focus of other guidelines.
